Good morning, my friends!
Calling all baseball and softball fans! Does it get any better than Opening Day? While Major League Baseball's version is epic, I'll put in a good word for Little League Opening Day – it's pure magic. Doesn't matter your age on the field, the start of a new season crackles with excitement.
This past weekend, our family had our own Opening Day for Little League. Classic Michigan weather – a brisk 44 degrees and whipping wind. But guess what? My heart overflowed with joy. This year, I get to coach both my kids, and it's an experience I wouldn't trade for the world.
Opening Day Coach's Box Score:
E (Daughter): 2 for 3 in coach pitch (I snagged her for a strikeout – apparently, my pitches had a bit too much movement!).
B (Son): 2 for 2 in tee-ball (He even managed to run to the right base and get his pants good and dirty – a true baseball baptism!)
As many of you, loyal readers know me in person or by reading along for over twenty editions of Mornings with Mickey, baseball, and softball hold a special place in my soul. It was the first game my late father introduced me to, the first sport I ever played, and the one I excelled at most. The diamond has always been where I found my tribe.
Speaking of diamonds, how about a little game of 2 Truths and a Lie about my baseball/softball history? Can you guess which one is the fib?
I played on a team that won a fastpitch softball championship in North Mankato, MN.
I was part of a team that reached the Little League State Finals in Wyoming, MI.
My high school team conquered the North Central Thumb League.
Here's the thought that's been bouncing around my head as I write: how often do we experience the pure, unadulterated excitement of Opening Day throughout the year? Why not make that kind of enthusiasm a regular occurrence? Let's reframe our thinking together. Let's greet each day with the same wide-eyed wonder we have for Opening Day! Let's make every day an adventure!
